Attendance Policies & Absences

EVERYDAY COUNTS...
STUDENT ARRIVAL TIME
Students are not to arrive at school earlier than 15 minutes before their class begins. There is no supervision for students who come earlier than fifteen (15) minutes before they begin school. Students are to report to the playground immediately upon arrival or the cafeteria if they are eating breakfast.
Parents who pick up students must be prompt. Remember, kindergarten students become anxious quickly and there is NO supervision for them after 1:15pm / 12:55pm on Wednesdays.
PARENTS/GUARDIANS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DROP OFF OR PICK UP STUDENTS IN THE STAFF PARKING LOT BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL.

TARDY STUDENTS
Tardy students miss valuable instruction time and they interrupt the instruction of other students in class. For state attendance purposes, the only excused reasons for being late are dental or doctor appointments, and a note from the doctor needs to be presented when arriving at school for a tardy slip, that is time dated.

PLEASE HELP US TEACH STUDENTS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ARRIVING AT SCHOOL ON TIME.
If a student is continuously tardy (tardy more than 30 minutes on three days in one school year) a truant report will be sent to the Child Welfare and Attendance Department. (Ed. Code 48260.5)

ABSENCES
Please call the school office at 317-5200 the morning your child(ren) is absent or send a note upon returning stating the reason for the absence.
To receive the most complete education, it is very important for students to be at school. Very often, the interactive group work and the teacher's direct instruction cannot be duplicated at home. Therefore, it is not possible for all assignments missed to be made up at home. If you would like homework for your sick child, please call the school office before noon so that the work can be ready for pick-up in the office by 3:30pm.
School success is directly related to good attendance. Poor performance in the classroom is often the result of a poor attendance record. If students are to achieve maximum value from their school education, 100% attendance is necessary. Each school maintains a daily attendance record by grade and by instructional level program for each student.
A truant report will be sent to the Child Welfare and Attendance Department when a student is absent from school without a valid excuse on 3 full days in one school year.

ABSENCE EXCUSES
State law defines the only valid excuses for absence from school as:
 Illness or quarantine. Students will have a maximum of 5 days of excused illness per year without a written verification from the doctor.
 Medical or dental appointments (appointments should be after school hours). If you are unable to schedule these appointments after school hours, please have a valid medical excuse printed from the doctor’s office, to be given to the school office when you arrive at school.
 Attendance at funeral services for a member of the immediate family.
All other absences are unexcused. Students will be referred to the Child Welfare and Attendance supervisor for excessive absences and/or tardies.
We encourage good attendance, but ask you to keep your children home if they have any of these conditions: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, severe stomach pain, a runny nose with thick, green mucus, severe congestion, or fever. The staff and all of our children appreciate not being unnecessarily exposed to infections and we need your help to do this.

LEAVING DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
All students are required to check out through the office whenever they leave school other than at dismissal time. Parents taking a student out of school during the school day must sign the child out in the office. Students leaving on their own must have a signed note from a parent, and a phone number, giving the time and reason for early dismissal, and an Off-Campus Pass from the school office. Students will not be released to any persons other than their parents unless they are on the emergency card or have written authorization from the parent, (this includes older siblings).
All students leaving more than 30 minutes before dismissal time will be marked with a 30
minute tardy as you are missing more than 30 minutes of your academic day.
Since it is critical for teachers to have the necessary time to give instructions and reminders for the next school day, hand out homework and various papers, and update students as needed on classroom activities, students will no longer be dismissed the last 10 minutes of the school day. When a student is called from the classroom early, they are missing the very important end of the day information and it is disruptive to teaching and to their classmates.
If there is a medical or dental appointment, please present proof or an appointment card to the school staff and then your student will be called to the school office after an off-campus pass is printed.
All students leaving early for a medical appointment are required to bring a medical verification for the appointment the next school day or the tardy will remain in place.
