Dr. Daryl Camp, superintendent of the San Lorenzo Unified School District (SLZUSD), has been honored with two major 2024 regional and state awards for leadership in K-12 education.
The California Association of Asian and Pacific Leaders in Education (CAAPLE) presented him with its statewide Advancing Leadership Award for 2024, and Region 6 of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) gave him with its annual Nels Nelson Award, which recognizes an enduring contribution to public education.
Dr. Camp, who this coming year will be ACSA’s president-elect, received the Nels Nelson award on April 18 at the organization’s Administrator of the Year Awards Dinner for Region 6 in San Ramon. ACSA Region 6 covers Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
The award is named for the first executive director for Region 6, who also a longtime SLZUSD principal. It goes to someone with longstanding service to ACSA who has demonstrated “ethical and moral leadership, continuing commitment and dedication to student achievement, and is a visionary who lays foundations of educational excellence that will continue beyond their tenure.” Dr. Camp has served in several prior leadership roles with ACSA, including as a statewide board member.
Presenting the award was its 2023 recipient, Dr. Tracie Noriega, a former assistant superintendent of educational services for SLZUSD who is now ACSA’s senior director of diversity, equity and inclusion.
“As a former member of Dr. Camp’s cabinet, I can truly attest to his ethical and moral leadership, his commitment to student achievement and being a visionary” Dr. Noriega said. “I have seen all of this in action.”
On April 20 in Newport Beach, Dr. Camp received the 2024 Advancing Leadership Award from CAAPLE.
A public-school educator in California for more than 30 years, he also has served on the Board of Directors for the state’s Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team and is a Masters in Governance faculty member and governance consultant for the California School Boards Association. In 2020-21, he completed a two-year term as president of the California Association of African American Superintendents and Administrators.
Dr. Camp said he sees a direct connection between his work in leadership and the goal of advancing student success.
“It’s great being recognized for making a contribution to education and those who lead in education throughout the state,” he said, “because supporting our leaders is another way of supporting our student scholars.”
